Perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of Oaro Beach and the Kaikōura Ranges, Glenstrae Ridge is pure magic.

This secluded off-grid retreat just outside Kaikōura offers a serene escape, making it the ideal spot to unwind and recharge for a few days of serenity.

My partner and I arrived to a setting sun, casting pink and purple light onto our little home for the weekend. The hot tub’s fire had been stoked, so we watched the smoke roll over the horizon as we unpacked our cheese board and poured some wine. With 360-degree views of snow-capped Mount Fyffe, rolling hills, and the dolphin-frequented bays below, there was no shortage of views to marvel at.

Before our first dip, we savoured the charm of our home away from home, a space partially crafted by David – part-owner, skilled joiner, and fourth-generation on the farm.

He and partner Gabby filled the space with luxurious touches like a rain showerhead, a cosy wood fire, and modern kitchen equipped with a gas cooktop, striking a nice balance between home comforts and elegance. With windows framing every picturesque view, it was kind of like looking at a postcard at every turn.

Aside from the grazing cows, the retreat is secluded. So much so that it takes a short trip in a 4WD side-by-side to access the cabin. The ride offers a bit of adventure and stunning views as you catch glimpses of the cabin from below.

Situated on a working farm, you can’t drive your vehicle in or leave the property, but with a hot tub and endless ocean views, why would you want to? However, if you’re eager to explore the area, you can book a transfer for an additional fee.

The seclusion means you must bring in all your own food, as it’s self-catering. Many couples opt for cheese boards and wine, and who could blame them?

While we went simple the first night, we fully utilised the kitchen on the second, prepping a hearty salad and taco feast. We enjoyed our meal with a front-row view of the setting sun while the fire roared.

On our second morning, my partner – a night owl who grumbles at getting out of bed before 10 on weekends – declared he was a morning person. While I doubt this newfound enthusiasm will last, his unexpected claim was a testament to the place’s enchantment.

With no curtains to block the view, the winter sun roused us gently each morning, putting on a glorious show that we could enjoy by simply adjusting our pillows.

While you aren’t able to venture outside the wooden fence onto the sheep and beef farm, you’d hardly want to. The wood-fired hot tub needs little attention to stay stoked all day long and the 40C temperature warms the body and soul on a chilly winter’s day.

Lazing about in the tub, we watched whale boats go by and are almost certain we saw a whale, although I can’t confirm as I didn’t bring my glasses.

If you’re seeking reset from the stressors of everyday life, Glenstrae Ridge offers the perfect retreat. It offers a refreshing blend of comfort and seclusion, combining the cosy amenities of a holiday home with the tranquil feel of camping.

During your stay, don’t be alarmed to find yourself gazing at the ocean for hours – whether lost in thought or savouring the breathtaking views.
